Welcome to the blog. Great job on the weight loss. We have a handful of ex-smokers on the blog. Maybe they can lend some support. Good luck!

Burt,

Thanks very much, I truly appreciate the support and encouragement. I'm excited to have discovered this website and online running community. I think it will be a tremendous help for me in working towards my goal of Boston 2010. Thanks again!

From thedude on Tue, Jun 09, 2009 at 22:57:22 from 71.199.1.53

Colorado, Boulder campus? You were in the running/biking mecca. I went to Boulder, they have great places to run.

Cigs-

Take the money you were going to spend on cigarettes and put it in a jar for your entry into Boston. Try the gum for a while, the gum is easier to quit.

From Andrew_Boston_2010 on Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 09:51:14 from 170.49.217.216

Thanks Dude. I appreciate the advice.

Boulder, indeed. Great place, beautiful. I did appreciate the outdoors while I was there but certainly did not live a healthy lifestyle. The only running I did there was from the police at keg parties..Ha! My younger sister actually went there as well on a full athletic scholarhsip for running, but for me it wasn't until I graduated and entered the 'real world' that I discovered the joys of running.

Anyways,I will open up a cig jar and try that gum.. thanks again!

Andrew - welcome to the blog!

You will make an interesting case study to determine how much smoking slows you down. I do know that going from three packs a day to nothing allows a guy that could not run 16:00 mile to run 2 at 9:00 pace in a matter of a couple of months.

I also know, again from working with another struggling smoker, that a few occasional smokes and a binge combined with some beer three days before the race costs about 15 minutes in the marathon.

To run 3:28 before you quit smoking shows you have a decent measure of talent. You may very well be a 2:20 marathoner with everything done right. It would be interesting to see.

Andrew, welcome! Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking; sounds like you can make your BQ - you are close, and quiting smoking should help a lot. I used to live in Chicago, and enjoyed running along the lake. Good luck!

Great run! I just found your blog. I hope the best for you as you try to qualify for Boston. Are you doing the Chicago marathon? I've heard that is a quick, fast course. Boston is totally worth buckling down and working toward!

Hi Bec!

Thanks for your note - I truly appreciate the support. I am in fact running Chicago on October 11th, with the goal of running in 3:10 or less in order to qualify for Boston.. have you run it before? Take care...

Glad to hear you are sticking with the training, and not smoking. I have a buddy that went from 220 to 180. He qualified for Boston at St. George by 11 seconds. It didn't take him that long to train-up. I'm not sure what Chicago Marathon is like, but a lot of people BQ there. St. George is kind-of hilly, net downhill, but hilly just the same. You'll get to Boston. My marathon times are wildly inconsistent about 4 hours between best and worst. So 18 minutes may seem like a lot, but luck, prep, weather, attitude, etc. go a long long way.

You should run the D-news on Friday. Sounds like the temperature will be about what you are use to.

Good Luck.

Planned on running this morning... passed for extra sleep. Might take a late-night run upon returning to Chicago tonight. Or, might good to take today off - I started feeling soreness/tightness in my calf and thigh muscles during the 2nd half of yesterday's run - could probably use a day off. BUT - consistency. No skipping, no excuses, 6 days a week.

I start my next project next Monday 8/3 in Houston, so no escaping the brutal Texas heat! In fact probably hotter in Houston. Looking forward to some nice long runs in Houston's Memorial Park... it will be a welcome change to be running in the company of others! Also looking forward to the Chicago R&R Half Marathon this Sunday. Stay tuned....

Standard 8 mile run, 59 minutes, and I felt great  (especially considering the 17 mile run I did on Sunday)

I felt good about this performance, faster that I thought I was. Ran in sub 1:24, placing 85th out of 14,438 total finishers. Top 100 baby!

Ideal running conditions today in the beautiful city of Chicago. I was originally hoping to crack the 1:30 mark, set out early with the 1:25 pace group and aimed to stay with them. After 7-8 miles decided I could do so, and then started pulling ahead. Ran at 6:26 pace for the first 10 miles and finished at 6:24 pace, as I picked it up a bit for the final 3 miles or so. Felt strong, other than some minor muscle soreness. Good confidence booster in training for Chicago Marathon October 11th. Don't want to get cocky but this race has given me a new-found motivation and confidence that I am actually capable of a Boston Qualifying time, maybe even of breaking the 3 hour mark. I've really got to make a sincere effort to quit smoking for good though!! Another 1/2 marathon here in a month or so.....to be continued.

Thanks Mom and Dad for coming out to support me!!!

Andrew:

You have confirmed my suspicions with this race. You are a very very talented runner. Even after all the damage from smoking you may still have a sub-2:30 marathon in you. Who knows, maybe faster, maybe even Olympic Trials Qualifier (2:19), maybe even a top 20 finish at the Trials.

With this potential it is not surprising that Satan, the enemy of God, would want you to smoke. He hates the light and loves the darkness, he hates everything that shines, and he would be greatly offended if your light shone in its fullness. So he does what he can to stop you. The good news is that he has no power except what you give him by your choices, so all it takes to thwart him is one firm decision to be good.

I expect that if you do everything right you will see something in the 2:40 range in a year.

The key is to remain consistent in training, and particularly in recovery. Recovery consists of proper diet (including abstinence from harmful substances) and rest.

I am curious about your top end speed. What can you run 100 meters in?

From Andrew_Boston_2010 on Mon, Aug 03, 2009 at 15:42:36 from 66.54.158.66

Thank you everyone for the generous support, I sincerely do appreciate it! It really helps to receive positive feedback/reinforcement from your fellow runners. One of the things I really love about this blog and the running community is the support everyone shows one another, it really makes a difference, so thank you!

Barry - This was the first 1/2 marathon I've participated in, so I suppose one would consider it a PR. I'll have the opportunity to improve on this time 9/13 with another 1/2 marathon in Chicago.

Sasha - Thank you for your advice and words of encouragement, you've helped to inspire me and find out what I am actually capable of. I'm not sure what I can run a 100 meters in, I haven't checked any time at all recently. I'll get back to you. Thanks again.

Congratulations on a PR! Your splits suggest you were in about 1:19 shape but held back too much in the early miles.

You should be able to go under 3:00 in the marathon. I would suggest pacing yourself at 7:00 per mile. This will give you some room to BQ if you blow up. But you should not blow up too bad. You if you can run 1:22 half closing in 5:46, 1:30 for the first half will be a jog. Then you should have at least another 5 miles at 7:00. If you can make it to 20 miles in 2:20, you can go as slow as 8:00 for the last 6 and still BQ.

So I would just focus on no miles slower than 7:00, but no miles faster than 6:55 until you get to 20.

Sore right ankle following yesterday's long run, although the pain subsided drastically in a 24 hour period. May be attributed to new shoes I started running in last Monday 9/14 and probably still breaking in. (although it's the same Nike Vomero 4 I've always run in). Probably should have rested today but decided to go out for a relaxed 8 mile jog. Started to experience some noticeable pain/discomfort in the last 2 miles. 8 miles in 59:25 for a 7:25/mile pace. Probably going to stay off the ankle with a rest day on Tuesday - don't want to take any chances with the Chicago Marathon approaching in less than 3 weeks.

Be careful with the pace. Yes, you can run 6:40s and it does feel easy, but it beats up the body overtime. Ease off to 7:20 or so, if the legs start itching run a mile, no more than that, under 6:00.

From Andrew_Boston_2010 on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 17:42:51 from 66.54.158.66

Sasha thanks for your input. I've been suffering from some right ankle pain - and as a result just took five days of rest before going out on a 12 mile easy run yesterday. Should I be concerned having taken a 5 day break with the marathon approaching on Oct 11th? The ankle issue didn't start occuring until after I started running in a new pair of shoes about 3 weeks ago. They are the same Nike Vomera 4's I've always worn, just a new pair. Anyways, the ankle tends to get a little swollen (by the inner bone that juts out) and causes discomfort when I run. It usually is more painful post-run ... icing it for 20 mins has helped. For example after my 21 mile long run on 9/20, I was in some major pain, hobbling around, but the next day it had mostly subsided. Afterwards, the following Mon and Tues, 9/21 and 9/22, I went out for 8 mile easier runs and the pain returned and got worse. So I took 5 days off until yesterday, when I went for a 12 mile run in about 1:26. I started feeling the ankle about 1/2 way through. It's definitely bearable but I feel like it will slow be down. I know you're not a doctor, but any thoughts? Also, how would you suggest approaching the next week and a half or so, in terms of training, mileage, etc? I want to give myself the best chance on race day. My sister is a former distance runner, and her thoughts:

"Think you better go have the ankle looked at...if it's tendonitis it will get worse running. Get a prescription

for a physical therapist for ultrasound and stim and to ice and take Arnica and stay off it. You should probably be tapering now anyway for the marathon. Maybe go see a sports med person after work who can take a look at it. Maybe even a cortisone shot will help you."

I would sincerely appreciate any advice that you or anyone else could provide. Thanks!

Andrew:

Training-wise, as long as you do some jogging/cross-training not a whole lot will change. I would keep it very mild as not to aggravate the injury.

Your sister had a good idea. If you have the money or good insurance getting professional help can never hurt. The trouble is that a lot of times you pay a whole lot of money for them to tell you it is nothing serious and will go away with rest and icing.

Early morning flight to Houston today (4:45am wake-up call was not enjoyable).

Went out for a post-work run around 18:15, ran 12 miles in 1:26 exactly for a 7:10/pace. Started feeling right ankle pain about 5 miles in, even after 5 days off... I'm a little worried.

Mission accomplished - Boston 2010 is next (already registered)!! Also raised $2000 for the American Cancer Society in the process.

Thanks everyone for your great advice and words of encouragement!

Check it out, made the chicago sun-times website (running through Chinatown - mile 23, that's me on the right) with my german friend/running coach Martin. Sweet.

Congratulations! It is one thing to know you can run a fast time, but it is something else to actually do it.

Looking at the splits you held your own in the second half very well. I would say you paced it perfectly.

Wow, what a big PR!! Is this still as a cigarette smoker? Please tell me "no". Holy cow, if so you are headed for a 2:30 real soon at quitting time, right? Since I never read your blog before, I like to read up on race reports, I probably missed that announcement. Great for you raising money for the American Cancer Society....uhhh I guess that means you quit? Happy post marathon recovery :D.
